Bag

With circular needle, cast on 210 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in Pat St until piece measures approximately 13”, end on Rnd 1 or 3.  Bind off in Pat St on Rnd 2 or 4.

Finishing

With RS facing, using crochet hook, work 1 sc in each st around bound-off edge of bag.  Join with a sl st in first sc.  Fasten off.  This is the top of the bag.  Fold bag in half and sew bottom seam.  Fold bottom of bag so that bottom seam faces you, forming a point at each side.  Using tapestry needle, sew across bottom from one side to the other 2 1/2” in from each point.  Fold points up toward sides of bag and sew end of each point to center side of bag.  Insert cardboard into bottom of bag so that it lies flat.  Measure straight up one side of bag from point to top and mark with a pin.  Measure out 2 1/2” from pin in each direction and place another pin.  Remove center pin.  Pinch top of bag together lengthwise so that the pins are on the fold.
Note:  When inserting grommets through knitted fabric, push strands of yarn apart and insert shank of grommet between stitches – do not break yarn as this may cause piece to unravel.  Following directions on package, insert a grommet  1/2” in from pin through double thickness of bag.  Repeat at all 4 corners of bag.  Remove all pins.  This should give you about a 1 1/2” pleat at each top corner of bag with a grommet holding each pleat together.  Sew handles securely to top edge on front and back of bag using whip stitches as in photo.
Tassels (Make 4):  Cut a 5” long piece of cardboard.  Wrap yarn 100 times around cardboard.  Cut yarn at bottom to free wrapped strands.  Tie strands in center with a 6” long strand of yarn, then fold strands in half over 1st tie and wrap strands 1” down from top with a 12” long strand of yarn, tying securely.  Trim ends of tassel to even off.
Twisted Cords (Make 4):  Cut three 36” long strands of yarn.  Put strands together and fold in half.  Tie the ends in a knot.  Holding the knot in your hand, slip the loop over a hook and pull tight.  Slip a pencil through the knotted end and twist until cord is so tight that it can’t be twisted further and starts to double back on itself.  Put 1 finger in center of cord and carefully fold in half, letting the 2 ends of cord twist together.  Fold cord in half and sew both ends to top of a tassel.  Insert center of cord through 2 grommets at one end of bag then pull tassel through the loop, pulling up tight.  Insert center of 2nd cord through 1 of these 2 grommets and pull that tassel through the loop pulling up tight.  Repeat on the other side of bag.  This gives you 2 tassels at each end of bag as in photo.
